Live life to its fullest!

Does anything here sound familiar?

Do you have Bible verses that seem to stand out to you head and shoulders above the rest?  I do. And one of mine since I first read it is when Moses was standing before the people, sharing his last words of encouragement, admonishments and warnings.  I can almost see him now, standing on a ridge so he can be seen and heard by all, passionately declaring:

“Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach…. See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction….”

Those thoughts are taken from Deuteronomy 30:11-20 where he lays out for his people what will bring them life and blessings, and what will bring them the exact opposite, cursed lives and “death”. And he started out by encouragingly telling them the best of life is within their reach!  As he was drawing his time with them to a close, among his final words were these memorable ones,

“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.
Now choose life.”

Our quality of life is a choice folks. Living life to its fullest with others is a choice. But these verses show it’s conditional.  It’s true as individuals… and as a nation, like the people of Israel learned the hard way. Blessings came as they kept God in His rightful place in their hearts and everyday lives.  But when they turned away from that?  They were warned the “curses” would come into play, and they did.

Were these words and principle of living intended for just Israel?  No. For as we dig into the Old and New Testament, we soon see the choice is laid before all God’s people, past, present, and future.  And I believe America’s founding and subsequent years illustrate that too.

As an individual I am so thankful that years ago I chose life!  How about you?
