I feel awed…

Yesterday I experienced new understanding about Christ’s birth. I realized that Christmas is not so much about celebrating the birth of our Savior as much as it is celebrating the fulfillment of the prophecies of his coming and what it would mean to all mankind! Think of the odds of only eight of the “predictions” of promise being fulfilled in the birth of one wee baby!

Well, co-authors Peter W. Stoner and Robert C. Newman thought of that too and calculated the odds in their book, Science Speaks. This excerpt I’ve taken from an article in Christiananswers.net tells about it well:

The book was based on the science of probability and vouched for by the American Scientific Affiliation. It set out the odds of any one man in all of history fulfilling even only eight of the 60 major prophecies (and 270 ramifications) fulfilled by the life of Christ.

The probability that Jesus of Nazareth could have fulfilled even eight such prophecies would be only 1 in 1017. That’s 1 in 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000.

Stoner claims that that many silver dollars would be enough to cover the face of the entire state of Texas two feet deep. Now I’ve been to Texas. I’ve driven for days to get across Texas. Texas is a very big state. Who in his right mind would suppose that a blindfolded man, heading out of Dallas by foot in any direction, would be able, on his very first attempt, to pick up one specifically marked silver dollar out of 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000?!

Doesn’t this image of a blindfolded man meandering among silver dollars piled up 2 feet deep, stretching thousands of square miles, then suddenly bending over to plunge his hand into the pile and pull out THE right silver dollar bring to light the unbelievable magnitude of the birth of this one baby, planned by God, to fulfill a promise He made to man so long ago.

It boggles the mind.  How can we NOT believe God is real, that He sent His Son to pay a price that only He could give so that we might be set free to live as sons and daughters of Him forever?

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
